[Abstract]
It is important to maintain skin barrier function for not only esthetic field but also prevention of skin diseases. Ceramide, an intercellular lipid plays a pivotal role in skin barrier function. We have found that ethanolic extract of Poria Sclerotium increased ceramide level in HaCat, a keratinocyte cell line derived from human skin. The elevation of ceramide level was caused by enhancement of ceramide synthase expression and reduction of ceramidase expression. Furthermore, Poria Sclerotium increased stratum corneum ceramide level in preliminary in vivo test.
